Obituary of Bruce Roberts

Bruce S. Roberts, age 91 of Honey Brook, PA formerly of Huntingdon Valley, passed away September 1, 2015 at Hickory House Nursing Home in Honey Brook. He was the beloved husband of June F. (Wylie) Roberts with whom he shared 69 years of marriage on August 30, 2015.

Born in Philadelphia, Bruce was the son of the late Sinclair T. and Ruth A. (Horn) Roberts.

He attended Frankford High School where he was a member of the ROTC program and graduated in 1942.

In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. While in the Marines during WWII, he was a ground crewman as part of an aircraft combat wing of Grumman Avenger torpedo bombers, where he was a radio technician for the aircraft radios. This is what instilled his love of that era of propeller driven war planes, although after the war he did not pursue becoming a pilot himself. His favorite fighter was the F4U Corsair and his favorite bomber was the B25 Mitchell.

His service to our country spanned a period of over 10 years. In 1946, he served Reserve duty for the USMC and in 1951 he served Reserve duty with the PA National Guard until 1954.

Bruce was a graduate of Drexel University where he received his degree in Electrical Engineering.

Bruce loved the Jersey Shore. He spent his childhood summers in Ocean City, NJ where his family had a home there. He owned his first boat when he was just a teenager. He loved the sea, and enjoyed power boating and sailing. He was an avid saltwater fisherman, had his captain's license and taught navigation classes through the United States Power Squadron. He was the happiest when he was "down the shore."

In addition to boating, Bruce enjoyed skiing well into his 60's, enjoyed a good James Bond movie and playing the organ.Bruce was also a very good chess player who often played with his friends.

Bruce was employed by Bell Telephone for 38 years as an engineer.

Bruce and his family had resided in Huntingdon Valley for 58 years. He and June were both Charter members of the Memorial Baptist Church in Huntingdon Valley for over 50 years. He was a devout Christian, loved the Lord, sang in the church choir and was a lifelong church trustee.

In addition to his bride June, Bruce leaves a son: Steven Roberts and his wife Karen of Scottsdale, Arizona and a daughter: Janet Smith of Downingtown, PA. 3 grandchildren: Kristin and Brad Smith and Brian Beehan.

He was preceded in death by 2 children: William and Deborah Roberts.

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Wednesday September 9, 2015 from 10 AM at to his Funeral Service at 11 AM at Kirk & Nice Suburban Chapel 333 County Line Rd., Feasterville PA. Interment with Final Military Honors in Sunset Memorial Park.
