IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David W.
Guggenheim
June 23, 1929 – January 16, 2021
David Guggenheim, accomplished cellist and beloved teacher, passed away last Friday at the age of 91.
David was born in Philadelphia where his love of music was nurtured in local public schools. A lifelong learner, David sharpened his talent through continued studies with prominent cellists in the 1950s.
Known for his attractive and vibrant sound, David's professional achievements ranged from his role as principal cellist of the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra until his retirement in 2000 to his many performances as featured soloist with world famous classical dancers. David was an original member of the Philadelphia Little Symphony and a cellist with symphony and opera orchestras. Though a lover of chamber music, he played for musical theater and choral groups, in many Atlantic City casino shows, and as a cellist in Philadelphia's recording studios.
Throughout his life, David shared his talent as a gifted cello instructor and was very proud of his many students that became successful professional musicians and teachers themselves. He lived in Montgomery County with his brother, Charles, until his death in 2012.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30am on Saturday, January 23rd, 2021 at Kirk and Nice Suburban Chapel, 333 W. County Line Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006. Donations in David's name may be sent to The Settlement Music School, PO Box 63966, Philadelphia, PA 19147.
