Obituary of Irma Ellmore

Irma Doris Meier Ellmore, 89, of Spring Mill Presbyterian Village, Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania, died on January 29, 2014. Irma was born on September 04, 1924 at the family home in Schwenksville, Pennsylvania and had previously resided in Maple Shade, New Jersey, West Chester, Pennsylvania, Middlesex, New Jersey and Somers Point, New Jersey. After World War II, she married John Winfield Ellmore and they remained married until his death in 1991.

Irma, who was known to many, as "Goose", is survived by her three children Jacqueline Ellmore Roth, Douglas Ellmore (Irina) and Sandra Ellmore. She is also survived by four grandchildren Sarah Courtney Tudor, Rachel Courtney, Svetlana Moeller-Finn and Yuliya VanHeusen as well as four great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents Frederick Meier and Sarah MacDonald Meier and her siblings John Meier, Merion Meier Hellings, Donald Meier and Craig Meier. She is survived by one brother Alan Meier.

Irma obtained the nickname "Goose" when she started grand-mothering in 1980 and started calling herself "Granny Goose". Eventually everyone shortened it to "Goose" and the new name stuck. She enjoyed collecting goose memorabilia. She was known for her magnetic personality, her contagious smile and laugh, her quick wit and her flamboyant personal style. She loved living at the Jersey Shore (where she had originally met her husband in Cape May) and enjoyed shopping, watching television and spending time with friends in Atlantic City.

Irma had had the opportunity to be a contestant in the Miss America pageant in the 1940s but turned it down to marry John. After completing her mothering, Irma held various bookkeeping positions during her lifetime and was greatly appreciated by her employers for being dedicated, prompt and accurate. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all who knew her.
