James J. McElroy Jr., age 85 of Philadelphia, PA passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.
Born and raised in Philadelphia to the late James J. Sr and Catherine (McAleer) McElroy. He was a graduate of West Catholic High School before proudly serving the United States Army. After being honorably discharged from the army, he joined the Philadelphia police academy before beginning his career as a police officer in 1965. He retired from the 15th District in 1986. He was also employed for the Philadelphia School District as a NTA for over 20 years. James met the love of his life, Diane (Benz) McElroy, and married on January 16, 1976. He was a wonderful husband, brother, and uncle.
James was a very active man, he enjoyed jogging, participating in the Broad Street Run and various other charitable runs, visiting Atlantic City, casinos, the Jersey Shore. He was a member of the Elks lodge – Wildwood, and American Legion.
Son of the late James J. Sr and Catherine (McAleer) McElroy. James is survived by his devoted wife, Diane McElroy; beloved sister, Joan Bargar; cherished brother-in-law, William Benz Jr.; Nieces, LeAnn Pennegar; Nephews, Jeffrey (Ellie) Bargar, Keith Bargar, Richard, David and Christopher Benz; as well as several great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial service for James at 11 AM on Friday, January 3, 2025 at the Chapel of Memories in Sunset Memorial Park.
Friends may call from 10:30 AM until service time to share fond memories. James will be laid to rest immediately following services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in James' name may be made to American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org/).
