Obituary

JOAN C. WINTHER, ("Gimme") age 90 years, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 12, 2025, after a brief 30-day battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully in her apartment spending her final day with her loving family. She was able to speak with every family member before she closed her eyes for the final time.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, Ernest and Margaret Highland, as well as by her brother and his wife, Robert and Florence (Magee) Highland. Joan met the love of her life, Albert Richard Winther at Disston Memorial Presbyterian Church and together they resided in Philadelphia for most of their married life. They moved to Wesley Enhanced Living in Hatboro in 2017 where they enjoyed senior community living. They were married for 64 years before his passing in 2021.

Born on December 2, 1934, Joan dedicated her life to her family. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her children, Robert and Karen (Hensel) Winther and Diane and Nickolas Misciagno. Her heart overflowed when she spent time with her 6 grandchildren, Nickolas Misciagno, Michael (Jessica) Misciagno, Daniel Winther, Stephen (Alyson) Winther, Valerie Winther, and Robert (Lauren) Winther. She adored her 8 great-grandchildren, Adriana, Aubree, SJ, Dominic, Erik, Amelia, Sophia and Teddy. She sadly will miss the birth of her 9th great-grandchild due in February 2026. Each one held a special place in her heart and she always made sure they knew how much they were loved.

Joan was a wonderful cook and hosted regular Sunday dinners and every holiday until her children married. She was a remarkable caretaker for family and friends who needed her help and sacrificed so much to help others during her lifetime.

Joan worked at the Federal Reserve Bank in Philadelphia for many years and later ended her career working as a head teller at PNC Bank. She built great friendships with her co-workers and customers which continued long after her retirement.

An avid Phillies fan, Joan enjoyed watching every game and for a time had a partial season ticket plan. She had her favorite players and could debate anyone in the family about who were the best players. Joan even listened to her beloved Phillies game the night before she passed and enjoyed their big win!

Joan and her husband, enjoyed countless family vacations making annual visits to Avalon, New Jersey and ensuring both her children and every grandchild received trips to Hawaii and Disney World, their favorite vacation destinations. Family was a constant source of joy, love and happiness, sharing memories and laughter and creating a strong bond that remained unbroken throughout her life.

Joan Winther's life will be celebrated with love, gratitude, and fond memories by all who were fortunate enough to know her. As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the beautiful life she lived, the love she shared, and the countless ways she made our world a better place. May her memory continue to inspire us to live with kindness, thoughtfulness, genuine care and an interest in helping those around us.
