John C. Ferguson passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on June 2nd 2017. He was born in Philadelphia to Mabel and Walter Ferguson.

John grew up with five siblings in Philadelphia. He volunteered during his youth with the Philadelphia Fire Department and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He advanced swiftly through the army ranks during World War II. John carried the title of Fire Chief operating as a machine gun specialist. He completed his military career as a decorated Staff Sergeant.

While stationed in Washington D.C., he met his future wife Berta, who was a member of Woman's Army Corp. They returned to Philadelphia and married on January 1st 1944.

John and Berta raised a family in the Philadelphia suburb of Fox Chase. John joined the Philadelphia Fire Company and served 26 years until he retired in 1973. During that time John partnered with John Straszinski to build Ferguson and Straus Plumbing as a side job. The family was active members of Trinity Oxford Church and spent a lot of their free time gardening and canning. They were also part of the singing sensation The Doodily Dooers.

John was a diehard Philadelphia sports enthusiast. He supported the teams even as he cursed the TV while they were losing. He balanced this passion with building puzzles and playing cards. John was strong and healthy in his later years and lived on his own until 2011. He spent much of his days reading, solving Sudoku, playing cards and Bingo. John always lit up with visits from his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed hearing stories of their accomplishments and sharing these with the fellow residents of Manor Care.

In the end, John enjoyed telling stories of his life sharing his quick wit and sharp mind. Spending time listening to his stories and experiences always ended with a laugh.

John was preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty years, Berta G. Ferguson, who passed away in 2004. He is survived by his three children Janis M. Gommel (Richard), Geraldine E. Judson (Michael) and John L. Ferguson (Wanda). He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren as well as many other members of his extended family.

A memorial service will be held on June 12th at 11:30am. Services will be at Kirk & Nice Funeral Home located at 333 County Line Road in Feasterville, PA 19053. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate his life starting at 10:30am. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park following the memorial service.
