Obituary of John Karpowicz

John W. Karpowicz (Jack) of Philadelphia passed away peacefully on November 23, 2013 following complications of a recent surgery and long standing illness. Jack, son of the late John and Gertrude (Adamik) Karpowicz is survived by his loving wife Angela Lorio-Karpowicz, his sisters Lorraine Karpowicz, Anita Rowan and her husband Bill, and Christine Lewandowski. Surviving also are his step-daughters Debbie Weinrich and her husband Michael and Andrea Rees and her husband Greg. Jack was the proud and loving Pop-Pop of his grandchildren Nicole, Andrew, Avery and Austin Weinrich and Anna, Davis and Lila Rees. He will also be missed by his nephews Keith, Benjamin and John Lewandowski.

Jack was a former Marine who served in Vietnam and for many years worked as a proud member of the Philadelphia Fire Department and was in fact the first fire fighter in the Nation to return to active duty following a liver transplant 22 years ago.

Relatives, friends and members of Firefighters Local 22 are invited to attend his viewing Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. and from 8.45 - 9.45 a.m. Wednesday followed by a funeral service at Kirk and Nice Suburban Chapel. Interment will follow at Washington Crossing National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that donations be made to Penn Medicine Friends Fund, 3451 Walnut Street, 433 Franklin Building, Philadelphia, PA 19104 in recognition of the exceptional care that Jack received over many years. The family would like to offer their sincere gratitude to all of those who have provided support and medical care throughout the course of his many illnesses.
