Joseph W. "Joe" Whalen, 75, of Hilltown, PA passed away on December 25, 2019. He was the beloved husband of Susan (Brower) Whalen. They just celebrated their 40th anniversary this year. Along with his wife, Joseph is survived by his son, Timothy Whalen, his wife Sarah, and grandson Cooper. He is predeceased by his brother Howard ("Buddy") and sisters Dolores, Gloria, Jaqueline, and Mary.
Joe started in the elevator trade on April 22, 1969. He ran work for several companies and was a very strong union man. He was the Chairman of the Executive Board and attended 3 of the IUEC General Conventions; Canada, Hawaii, and Las Vegas during his many years on the Executive Board. He was the first Chairman of the Local 5 Picnic Committee and also served on countless other committees. Joe was also a NEIEP instructor. Before he retired, he was the on-site maintenance mechanic at Merck Pharmaceuticals for United Elevator and Thyssen Krupp Elevator Companies for several years. Joe was a member of the Golden Rail Club and went on many trips with the retirees. He was still involved with the union after retirement on December 31, 2009.
Joe served in the Army 1967 and was in active duty in Vietnam. He has various combat medals and served his country proudly.
Joe passed away on Christmas Day at noon surrounded by his family and friends in Doylestown Hospital, after a six week hospitalization for respiratory problems.
Friends and family are invited to Kirk and Nice Suburban Chapel, 333 W. County Line Rd., Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006 for his viewing on Friday, January 3, 2020 from 10:00am to 12:00pm. A funeral service will be held at 12:00pm with a luncheon to follow.
