Obituary

Judith Anne (Krumm) Doberstein

On August 25th, 2023 after a brief illness, Judith Anne (Krumm) Doberstein, 70, of Hatboro, PA left this world, peacefully and surrounded by her family.

Born on July 31st, 1953, in Abington, PA, Judy was the fourth child of the late Joseph and Mabel (Flanagan) Krumm and the oldest of the "little kids". She grew up with 3 sisters and 2 brothers and many aunts, uncles and cousins with whom she was close, no matter the distance. Proudly waving the purple and the gold, graduating from Upper Moreland High School in 1971, Judy started a three generation legacy at UM that includes her children and now some of her grandchildren. She wasn't in a rush to settle down right away after high school and spent the next several years working at Safeguard Business Systems and traveling with her work friends and her sisters.

In 1981, she became Judy Johnson when she married Bobby and they welcomed 3 kids over the next four years. Bobby J was a Philly kid, so they spent a few years living in the northeast, where she worked as an aide in the special education department of Lawton Elementary School, where her children attended, served on the board of the Home and School Association and designed and sewed dresses for a local distributor that became so highly in demand that she could barely keep up. Ultimately, Judy and Bobby were better apart than together and she returned to Upper Moreland with her kids to stay with her sister and brother-in-law. She then embarked on a career as the activity director at Ageless Friends, at which she excelled, due to her creativity, craftiness and innate ability to make every day a fun adventure. With vests for every holiday and occasion and the ability to plan activities for absolutely every day in existence,  the centers where she worked could have never found a more perfect fit for that job if they searched for a hundred years.

It was during her time at Ageless Friends that Judy cared for a very sweet woman whose daughter would eventually become a friend and introduce her to Ted Doberstein, the love of her life. Judy and Ted were set up on a blind date at an UMHS football game, where her kids and one of Ted's kids were in the high school and middle school bands. They spent the next 20 years dating, falling in love, getting married, blending families and making a home together that was filled with so much warmth and love and was the setting of wonderful memories for children, grandchildren, family and friends. Their love story was full of trips to their favorite home away from home in the Outer Banks, excursions to experience Phillies, Eagles, and Penn State sporting events in various stadiums and states, trips to visit children and grandchildren in Happy Valley, taking in every game, concert and recital of their more local grandkids, cozy weekends at home and holidays, birthdays and special events spent with all of their favorite people before being cut too short with Ted's passing in 2020.

Judy always made people around her feel comfortable and welcome and was quick with a kind word, a hand out to offer help, a snack or a meal, an open mind and sympathetic ear to listen and/or offer advice and a smartass quip, as needed. She spent her life taking care of everyone around her, the people in her life that she knew and loved and even people that she had never met. She could create magic, turning a regular boring day into something spectacular, sparkly and fun. She was a baker, a crafter, an amazing cook, a wonderful mom and the best grandmom any kids ever had. She was a beloved and loving sister, daughter, wife, stepmother, aunt, cousin and friend.

Judy is survived by her daughter, Amy Badey (Brandon) and her son, Mark Johnson, her stepchildren, Tim Doberstein (Karen), Abigail Doberstein (Katie Dry) and Joanna Doberstein, her grandchildren, Hunter, Liam, Lizzie, Tessa, Tony and Anna, her sisters Cookie Plenert (John), Susan Selman (Jim), Joanne Chapman (Bill) and her brother Jerry Krumm (Lynn) and many nieces (including Sarah, who was with her, providing comfort and love at the end), nephews and cousins and many other family members and friends who will all miss her terribly but whose lives are all better for having had her in them.

Services will be held on Thursday, August 31st, 2023 beginning with visitation at 10am at Kirk & Nice Suburban Chapel (333 W County Line Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006), a memorial service and 11am and interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Upper Moreland Music Patrons, 3000 Terwood Road, Willow Grove, PA 19090, to keep the musical arts alive and well at her alma mater.
