IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Loretta M.
Dimattia
June 7, 1930 – December 12, 2025
Loretta touched so many lives during her ninety five years and I am deeply honored to share some thoughts to what they meant to all of us. Like many of you here today I will always remember Loretta for her incredible generosity of spirt, sense of loyalty and grace.
When I think of Loretta certain moments stand out so vividly. I remember the time when we were riding in the car and they had just repainted the lines on Old Bristol Rd to make a left turning lane. Connie was driving and not following the traffic pattern. Mom was correcting her when a police car appeared and signaled for her to pull over. When the officer came to the window mom was first to say I told her she wasn't following the new traffic pattern at which point the officer let her off with a warning saying moms recounting of this story over the years will be punishment enough.
Loretta was devoted to her family in 1949 at just 19 she married Antonio DiMattia. Her father Warren Blatchley had just passed away from cancer. She moved in with her mother and new husband on Vista Street in Mayfair. Initially putting a family on hold she worked as a bookkeeper at Janey Cylinder co. and helped send my Father to U of P at nights. At the time my father worked for Sears and Roebuck which was on the Blvd. They moved to Holland in 1958 bringing newborn Warren. She gave birth to Connie in 1960. I was born in 1969 an unexpected blessing.
Loretta approached life with an unwavering belief that every day was a gift to be treasured. Weather she was working in her garden, Volunteering at the elementary school library or spending time with friends and family. She brought her whole heart to everything she did. Her integrity compassion and determination inspired everyone around her.
Many of us benefitted from her ability to do all sorts of crafts. There really wasn't anything she couldn't make or do. From sewing clothes to painting ceramics to doing puzzles on the kitchen table mom inspired me for my own love of restoring antiques.
Mom showed incredible strength through her later years with her bout with multiple myeloma a rare form of blood cancer. Even when facing pain and uncertainty she maintained her dignity and characteristic optimism living an additional ten years beyond what doctors expected.
Loretta found joy in such simple pleasures. Her morning routine of watching game shows. She never missed Wayne Brady on let's make a deal or Drew Carey on the price is right. She also enjoyed the animals that would come to our feeder. The male and female cardinals and the occasional deer.
Mom was a devoted churchgoer. She grew up at Holy Innocents in Tacony where she was married and baptized her three children. She also loved to sing and was a member of the
church choir. In later life she enjoyed becoming a member of Redemption Episcopal Church coming in person or zooming services each week. Her devotion will be missed.
While moms passing leaves an enormous void her legacy lives on in us. As a parent she showed her love through countless acts small and large. Never missing a school concert, remembering every birthday and milestone and creating special traditions that live on after her passing.
In closing Loretta showed us how to live a life of purpose and joy. Though we mourn her loss deeply we can honor her memory by carrying forward her spirit of generosity her commitment to family and her ability to find beauty in everyday moments. Loretta would want us to remember her with smiles rather than tears, to take care of each other and to appreciate the precious gift of life.
Thank you Mom for showing us what it means to live a life well lived. You will live forever in our hearts.
