Magdalen Daiseyetta Young-Lawton passed away peacefully, November 16, 2021 age 90 years. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, James Cornelius Lawton. She is survived by her children: Cassandra R. Lawton, Darryl S. Lawton (Charlene) and Derrick J. Lawton.
Magdalen was the second of six children to William and Nellie Carter Young Billings.
After high school in Madison, IL, where she lived with her Aunt Gertrude and Uncle Jerry Young, she enlisted in the Army and served honorably.
Magdalen then met and married James and were blessed with their three children.
She worked interesting jobs throughout her career: a runner for First Pennsylvania Bank, a jeweler, several departments for the City of Philadelphia, including clerk typist and audit courts. While there, she became the city's first female Real Estate Specialist in the Public Property Department.
After earning her real estate license, Magdalen joined the Women's Real Estate Council, PA Association of Realtors, the American Legion and other organizations for aid and service. She and her husband James owned and operated a real estate office in West Oaks Lane, where both worked along with full time jobs. Later she sold property at Petrone Real Estate in East Falls. Magdalen was also employed training new hires at Sears. She and James owned a small variety store in North Philadelphia, as well.
Magdalen was a proud member of Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting. Some Sundays she could be seen greeting parishioners into the Meeting room, and singing hymns with the choir.
She loved the theater and took many bus trips to Broadway in New York City. Her love of music took her to music festivals and concerts. Other travels included trips to Vermont, Alaska, Canada, Greece, Turkey, France, Mexico and the Bahamas.
She was a kind friend and neighbor, a loving and devoted mother and wife always willing to help anyone in need. She gave to many charities. She will be dearly missed by all who love her.
She is also survived by grandchildren Kyle Lawton (Corinne), Kody Lawton and James Lawton, greatgrandchildren Tristan and Lana, sisters Claretta Vinson, Inez Roper, Norma Jean Leachman and Marietta Styles, brothers Floyd Billings and Percy Billings and over 100 nieces and nephews.
Along with her mother and father, she is preceded in death by sister Dorothy Davis and brothers William Young, JC Young and Artis Young.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Visitation, December 2 from 11:00 AM -12:00 at Kirk and Nice Funeral Home, 333 County Line Rd, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006. A Graveside Service to immediately follow at12:30 PM in Chelten Hills Cemetery 1701 E Washington Ln Philadelphia, PA. 19138.
