Mary Ellen Gehring

Mary Ellen "Granny" Gehring, of Bensalem, went home to her Lord on Monday, January 28, 2019.  She was 91.

Mary Ellen was born June 9, 1927, in East Stroudsburg, PA.  After living in Philadelphia for a number of years, upon marrying, she relocated to Bensalem.

Daughter of the late Harold Hunt and Grace Ladlee Hunt, she is survived by a daughter, Laura Gehring-Ottinger, and son-in-law, Paul Ottinger, along with many nieces and nephews.  Mary Ellen also leaves behind her devoted grandpets, Happy, Max, Roxie, Tidbit, Peanut, Spotty and Ginger, who she loved dearly.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, her brother Richard and sister-in-law, Mary, her brother Harold and sister-in-law Irene, and her niece, Carole Uberti.

Mary Ellen retired from AT&T as a long distance telephone operator. Following her retirement, she worked as a nighttime telephone operator at Woods Services for a number of years.  Mary Ellen's greatest joy was playing bingo.  She did so regularly until multiple strokes disabled her in 2011.  Even recently, however, she still demonstrated her talents at the occasional bag bingo.

Paul and Laura would like to thank the amazing staff of Heartland Hospice for their months of compassionate care and concern.  A special thank you also goes out to Anne Blackmore, friend and caregiver, for her love and devotion to Mary Ellen and to Bill and Tim Hops, wonderful neighbors who looked out for Mary Ellen for decades.

Family and friends are invited to call from 9:30 until 10:30 am on Saturday, February 2, at Kirk & Nice Suburban Chapel at 333 County Line Road, Feasterville, PA. 19053.  The service will begin at 10:30 with interment following in Sunset Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to House of Hope Animal Rescue, Inc., so that more wonderful dogs like Happy can be saved.  They are located at P.O. Box 430, North East, MD 21901.
