Obituary

Nigohos "Nick" Ohanian of Trevose, PA died peacefully and with dignity on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at the age of 84 years old. Nick was of Armenian descent born in Cersh, Crimea, Ukraine, and immigrated to the United States as a child. He lived in Philadelphia where he enjoyed playing soccer during his high school days, met his lovely wife and graduated from Dobbins Vocation Technical School in 1956. Nick was a tool and die designer who also possessed much artistic talents which were seen in the many paintings and drawings; admired by many. He became a proud United States citizen in 1961. Nick's beloved wife Katharina (Kay) preceded him in death in May 2009.

Nick was a loving devoted father to four daughters – Betty Gwiazdowski (Bob), Debra Burns (Robert), Donna Straube (Rob), and Karen McKinley (Mike). He is survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends. Nick was best known as "Poppy" to his grandchildren and great- grandchildren, and "Big Nick" to his family and friends. He enjoyed being with his family and friends talking about his heritage, helping all with home improvements and sharing his thoughts on current events.

Nick was an extremely talented craftsman and designer who was a soccer player/enthusiast and enjoyed playing backgammon & pinochle, watching western cowboy movies/shows and coaching softball during his children's youth. Nick was a trail-blazer who was also a co-founder of the Lower Southampton "GALS" Softball organization in the 1970 when girls sports needed to become organized. Let's not forget his passion for his many outdoor fish ponds and indoor fish tanks. Nick was old-school ~ if he could not fix it, he built a new one himself. His garage was a fully-equipped workshop where he loved to spend time not only fixing things but creating many tools and useful items as well as working on classic cars.

Although the family mourns the loss of Nick, they rest firmly in the knowledge that he is at peace and in heaven. Funerals services will be held privately due to the coronavirus pandemic. In lieu of any flowers, we ask you make donations to the SPCA or any animal shelter in memory of Nick due to his love for animals.
