Obituary

Robert William Gordon, 76, of Glenside PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday January 4, 2025, with his family by his side.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Eleanor (McGowan) and Robert W. Gordon Jr. He graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School in 1966.

Bob was a proud Marine Corps veteran. He served his time as an electrician both stateside and overseas in Okinawa and Vietnam. After the Corps, he began his career with Bell Telephone (later Verizon) as a lineman, working until his retirement in 2004.

Bob was a selfless person and was very involved with his church and community. During Lent he would cook at St. Luke's spaghetti suppers. He volunteered for events at the girls' schools. He donated extra meals to the church and was known to extend an invitation to anyone who needed a home cooked meal; he thoroughly enjoyed cooking and experimenting in his kitchen. He knew people wherever he went. Even if he didn't know you, that wouldn't stop him from striking up a conversation, much to the embarrassment of his daughters.

Never one to sit still, Bob was as busy as ever during his retirement. With his electrician background and handyman skills, he always found a project to do, and to his wife's dismay, often multiple at once. He worked small jobs here and there and even took on bigger things like his own kitchen and bathroom renovations and various projects in his daughters' homes. Bob had a wealth of knowledge and experience, and if you needed his help, he didn't hesitate.

A regular outdoorsman, Bob loved spending time down the shore on family vacations, or in the Poconos, either hunting deer and turkey or just spending weekends there with the guys. He also enjoyed fishing; traveling more than once to Alaska where he caught and brought back halibut and multiple types of salmon, about 400 pounds in total. Bob was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, never missing an Eagles or Phillies game, and occasionally taking a trip to the stadiums to watch in person. He took pride in tending to his vegetable and flower gardens, and all of his houseplants. Within the last decade, he began raising his own backyard chickens, in a coup he built himself. He'd say it was for the grandkids, but it was fun for him too, and everyone benefited from fresh eggs. There's no doubt however, that most of his joy came from his family, his wife, girls, and six grandchildren.

Bob was the loving husband of 40 years to the late Carol (Mancino); a devoted father to Jacqueline (Scott) Smith and Nicole (Stuart) Goldstein, and the late Michelle Gordon; a cherished Pop-Pop to Leilani, Harrison, and Jameson Smith, and Mason, Nolan, and Maeve Goldstein; a dear brother-in-law to Robert (Rebecca), and Paul (Catherine) Mancino. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and of course the breakfast club at Rocky's, where he spent many of his mornings.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Laurine Slivak and his brother Joseph Gordon.

Relatives and friends may greet the family on Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 9:30-11:00 am, followed by his funeral service at 11:00 AM at Kirk and Nice Suburban Chapel, 333 W.
