Obituary

Samuel Chambers Smith, Jr. passed away peacefully Thursday, November 29 th , 2018 at Brandywine Living in Haverford. Sam was 97.

Born in Philadelphia on February 17, 1921, Sam was the son of Samuel and Fannie Smith. He attended high school in Philadelphia before enlisting in the U.S. Navy prior to World War II. Sam was a Radioman First Class, Radio Communications and Chief Petty Officer acting with Commander Aircraft Solomon Islands Flag Unit. He served under Admiral John S. McCain in the South Pacific in 1942. He formerly served on USS Tangier AV-8. Sam met his future wife Grace J. (Zitnik) Smith at the naval training base in Corpus Christi, Texas. They married on July 25, 1945.

Sam held positions at Solid State Equipment Corporation, Cardinal Electronics and other electronics firms. He also volunteered his services to Wrightstown, his home township of 63 years, as an auditor. In his spare time, Sam enjoyed spending time with friends and family, talking on the ham radio, photographing steam engines, and attending Masonic meetings. He was a member of the Tacony Lodge for 70 years and also attended at Newtown Lodge. He was incredibly proud of his country and military service, and was known for his deep devotion to Grace.

Sam is survived by his children, Janet and Samuel, grandson Marco (Dakota), great-granddaughter Savannah, and brothers Arthur and Edward. He will be deeply missed, and the family is reminded during this holiday season how fortunate we are to have shared so many wonderful experiences together.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend funeral services, which will be held Friday, December 7 th , at Kirk and Nice  Suburban Chapel, 333 County Line Road, Feasterville, PA ( 215 - 354 - 0085 ). Viewing will begin at 10:00 am and the service will begin at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his and Grace's names to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th fl., New York, NY 10001.
