Tommie June
Johnson
Jun 19, 1939 — Aug 14, 2026
It is with tremendous sadness & grief, I announce the passing of my beloved Mother, Mrs. Tommie June (Carter) Johnson. Tommie June passed away Friday 8/14/26 (87 yrs old), early in the morning after a short illness, even though she had been in ill health since getting Covid in 2022.
Tommie June was born in the front bedroom of her home that she grew up in, Bluefield, WV. She was unspoiled & full of pride. She may have been poor growing up (during the end of the Great Depression), but she always held her head up high & dared anyone to judge her or her family. She was the last living member of her large family.
She was the goodness & purpose in my life. She taught me morals, integrity & to treat others with kindness & respect. Her body may have been broken, but she was sharp as a tack & very strong in spirit & her absolute love of Jesus. Anyone who knew Mom loved her slow Southern accent! I would tease her all the time about how she talked, in good fun! She didn’t mind, though! Tommie June was a Model in her early twenties, a Toe dancer & worked as a manager at the Bluefield Sanitarium, before following my beloved father, Keith Johnson, to Fort Hood during his Military service. She once modeled at an event that Jackie Kennedy (wife of JFK) was attending before she became the First Lady of the US. Jackie Kennedy told my mom how beautiful she was & loved her modeling outfit. Mom was up to do anything, go anywhere my father got transferred to or for just going on adventures. We all called her The Gypsy of the family!
The neighborhood kids could just walk in the front door for a hug, a kiss & a meal. Mom would hold a big party on Mischief Night so all the kids would stay out of trouble. She was so good that way because she knew the kids were great kids & she wanted the best for them all. They called her “Mrs. J” or “Mom”. The neighborhood kids would get on the intercom at the local carnival & wish her a happy birthday every year. She donated her time for all school events when we were growing up, collected door to door for the American Heart Association. As a child, Mom had Rheumatic Fever, missed a year of school & had to learn how to walk again. She was that strong & resilient! She would teach the girls in our neighborhood how to make her famous fudge & other southern recipes. You could go to her if you needed help, share good news, get advice, with no judgement. She always looked for the goodness in everyone. Never a harsh word unless you hurt one of her loved ones. Then she was a lioness to protect her kids! She loved to do all the yard work & gardening. She was an expert in interior design & she could paint & wallpaper like a pro! There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do, she was SUPERWOMAN. I will never live up to her example. Everyone needs a Mother who tells you, you can conquer the world, & be there every single second supporting you in your dreams!
She was predeceased by her parents Thomas Walter Carter, Ruby Lee (Buttrey) Carter, sisters: Fern Lineberry, Charlotte Carter, Priscilla (Cookie) Denny and her brother Joseph Carter. She leaves behind her beloved daughter Kimberly Kaye Johnson (Southampton, PA) who took loving care of her the last few years 24/7, and never left her side, and son Christopher Keith Johnson (FL). 2 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren. Brothers-in-laws Arnold Johnson (NC) & Randal Johnson (VA).
No services will be held at this time. If you wish to post any messages or memories, please do so. I would love to hear from anyone who had known my Mom’s love & affection.
