Obituary

William Francis Donahue Jr., of Warrington, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully late on the afternoon of August 17, 2024, surrounded by his wife of 56 years, his siblings, his children, and his grandchildren. He was 79 years old.

Born in October 1944, the son of William Sr. and Anna, Bill grew up in a hardscrabble neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia. He was the eldest of five children. The experience of coming of age in an environment of limited means shaped the rest of his life. His friends and family knew him as hardworking, ambitious, and resourceful. Always placing the needs of others above his own, he was driven to make sure his loved ones had more opportunities than he had.

Bill was a proud military veteran. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1963 and volunteered to go to Vietnam to fight in the war. Instead, the military sent him to the North and South Pacific—namely, Hawaii and the Marshall Islands—where he spent the balance of his four-year enlistment. When he returned home to Philadelphia, he embarked on a long and prosperous career as an electrician with PECO. He also married his high school sweetheart, Patricia, with whom he had two children.

He was not only a skilled craftsman but also an all-purpose handyman who believed in doing things himself. Besides having completed all manner of home-improvement projects (often with significant amounts of cursing and blood loss), he also learned how to represent himself in the sale and purchase of a home, and plan for the future through investing and personal finance.

A longtime fan of Philadelphia sports, he loved the Phillies, admired the toughness of the Flyers and the Blazers, and always seemed to bet against the Eagles. Those closest to him appreciated his dry sense of humor, as well as his unflinching willingness to do almost anything for anyone who might ask; when a family member or a close friend needed help with a move or a home-improvement project, no matter how significant, he often received the first call.

Bill is survived by his wife, Patricia Donahue (née Reese); his two children, daughter Donna Coyle (Joseph) and son William Donahue (Donna); his siblings Nancy Dzumaga, Michael Donahue (Lori), Dennis Donahue (Debbie), and Stephen Donahue (Debbie); three grandchildren, Allyson, Nicholas, and Olivia Coyle; and his beloved dog, Maxie.

He will be missed terribly by his family and the many friends he left behind. His loved ones are welcome to pay their respects on Friday, August 23, starting at 10 a.m. The visitation and service of remembrance will be held at Kirk & Nice Suburban Chapel at Sunset Memorial Park, located at 333 County Line Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bill's name may be made to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation (https://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org).
