Obituary of William Kavash, Jr.

William H. Kavash, Jr. age 89 of Philadelphia, passed away Sunday August 23, 2015 at the Philadelphia Protestant Home in Northeast Philadelphia. He was the devoted husband to Martha A. (Myers) Kavash with whom he shared 63 years of marriage.

Born in Philadelphia on February 3, 1926, Bill was the youngest child of the late William and Elizabeth (McCleary) Kavash.

Bill grew up in the Olney section of Northeast Philadelphia and graduated in the 182nd class of Central High School in June of 1944.

Bill was drafted into the United States Army in July of 1944 and was stationed in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in August of 1946.

Upon return to the United States, through the "GI Bill," he attended and graduated from Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia in 1950.

Bill returned to Olney and began his working career at Proctor and Schwartz (later becoming Proctor Silex).

On November 3, 1951 he married Martha Myers.

Bill joined the Michael Arnold Lodge (years later merging with Richmond Lodge) of the Masonic Order, became a 3rd Degree Mason and served as the Lodge's Master in 1956.

Bill was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Olney where he served as an Usher, Elder, and Sunday School Superintendent.

In 1971 Bill and his family moved to the Fox Chase section of Northeast Philadelphia. Bill served as the Troop Committee Chairman for Boy Scout Troop 203 for many years.

After 33 years with Proctor Silex, he worked for the Defense Logistics Agency in Reading, PA and finally for the Philadelphia Water Department, until his retirement in 1992.

After retirement, Bill transferred his membership to the Memorial Presbyterian Church of Fox Chase, becoming a member of the choir.

In 2004 Bill and Martha sold their Fox Chase home and moved into the Philadelphia Protestant Home where he volunteered his time for many things.

Bill was a lifelong Philadelphia Phillies fan, enjoyed trains, Big Band music and parades. He loved his church, his country, the Masonic Order and his family.

In addition to his wife Martha, Bill leaves 2 sons: Robert W. Kavash and his wife Ellen of Glenside, PA and Glenn R. Kavash and his wife Linda of Holland, PA. His Granddaughters: Sarah and Emily Kavash. A sister: Edith Spooner. Preceded in death by his sister Ruth E. Kavash.

Relatives, friends and members of the Richmond - Solomon's Lodge #3 F&AM are respectfully invited to Bill's viewing on Monday August 31, 2015 from 10 AM and to his Funeral Service at 11 AM officiated by Pastor Meg Mann in the Chapel of the Philadelphia Protestant Home 6500 Tabor Road, Philadelphia, PA 19111. Interment with Military honors to follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Feasterville.
